5 steps to develop your church team

July 2023

Leading your church into spiritual growth starts with the team. If your leaders are growing, this will bring about effective ministry and exceptional teamwork; not to mention a sense of fulfilment and purpose. So, here are 5 steps to develop your church team.

Step 1: Identify and Encourage Talents & Gifts

Allowing space for your leaders to use their gifts and talents is important to their growth. Take time to understand what each leader’s speciality is and encourage this in their ministry.

Not only will they feel fulfilled and valued in what they are doing; your church team will be maximising its potential.

Step 2: Provide Training & Mentoring

It’s important to equip your church leaders with relevant teaching. Offer them useful resources such as books, videos, courses etc.

The most effective development is seen during team retreats. Getting away for a conference gives your leaders a chance to dive deep into the nitty gritty of difficult topics, Bible teaching and much more.

Step 3: Foster Collaboration

Collaboration is key to growth within your team. Encourage new ideas, team projects and open communication about tough subjects. Organise regular meetings to update the team on changes as well as provide a space to share their individual thoughts and visions.

Step 4: Clarify Your Aims

Without a clear vision, a team of church leaders will have no direction. It’s crucial to set your goals early on and regularly review these with your leaders.

If everyone is on board, your leaders will grow in their ministry aligned with the vision of your church. The famous saying, ‘Teamwork makes the dream work’ is just as true for your church team!

Step 5: Spend Quality Time Together

Taking time to bond with one another greatly improves the functionality of your leadership team. Did you know Aldi (founded in 1979) was a family-owned business? Their success was built on their close-knit relationships and exceptional teamwork.

Take time to adopt this family ethos. Get away for a conference or away day with your church leaders to fellowship and rest together.

Promoting the development of your team is vital in achieving the goals of your church. If this team is utilising their gifts, receiving mentorship and training, and working closely together on projects with good communication, you’ll notice the impact this has on your community.
