5 quick audio/visual tips for events

October 2024

Audio/visual will be part of your conference, whether you’re savvy or not, so knowing the dos and don’ts can help you prepare. Here are 5 quick audio/visual tips for events.

1. Always use a microphone

No matter how loud you think your voice is, always use a microphone! There will be people who will struggle to hear you, particularly those with a hearing aid who rely on the hearing loop.

Any microphones connected to the sound desk will be projected through the hearing loop into hearing aids within the meeting room.

2. Don’t overcrowd your slides

It’s tempting to add lots of notes to your slides during your talk but it is recommended to add no more than 8 lines per slide. Delegates sitting in the back at your conference will struggle to read lots of text and there’s nothing more disrupting than someone coming to the front to take a photo of your slides.

Remember, images speak a thousand words!

3. Hold your mic the right way

It’s tempting to hold your mic against your chest as you speak. However, the ideal position is to hold it in front of your mouth about a foot’s distance.

This way, you won’t need to project your voice as the mic will easily pick it up.

4. Always have a holding slide

During breaks and at the beginning of sessions at your event, it’s recommended to have a holding slide explaining what session is going on.

This provides clarity to your conference delegates as to where and when different seminars, talks and other sessions are taking place.

5. Keep it simple

Audio/visual does not have to be complicated. It can be as simple as ensuring you have a microphone for a speaker and some engaging slides for a talk.

A/V needs will differ depending on the type of conference but often it can be simpler than you think!

The audio/visual equipment at our Christian conference centres is free to use as part of our all-inclusive price. Watch our webinar, Simple Audio/Visual Guide To Your Event, to learn more about conference A/V.

We’re delighted to serve churches and Christian groups across the country with our conference spaces. Find out more about residential conferences at our DerbyshireNorthamptonshire and Hertfordshire venues.
