How Highgate House is caring for God’s creation

November 2025

At Highgate House, our mission isn’t just to create a place where Christians gather, grow, and encounter God together, it’s also to care for the beautiful world He has made. Set in the peaceful Northamptonshire countryside, our site is blessed with natural beauty and rich wildlife. We see it as a privilege and a responsibility to steward this land well.

Planting for the future

We have been intentionally investing in the long-term health of our landscape by planting:

  • Over 300 new trees
  • 30 hedgerows

Trees and hedgerows not only help absorb carbon and improve air quality, they also create habitats, food sources, and safe corridors for wildlife to thrive. This work supports ecosystems now and strengthens the land for future generations.

Welcoming God’s creatures

Highgate House is blessed with a thriving community of wildlife. We’ve spotted:

  • Badgers
  • Foxes
  • Rabbits
  • Moles
  • Snakes
  • Deer
  • A polecat
  • Red Kites
  • Buzzards

We are continually amazed at the variety and beauty of God’s creation right on our doorstep!

One of the maintenance team set up a wildlife camera. Here's what it captured!

To support these wonderful creatures, we’ve added structures designed to encourage safe habitats and healthy biodiversity, including:

  • 12 bat boxes, helping our bat population safely roost and support natural insect control and pollination
  • 24 bird boxes and 6 House Martin boxes, offering homes and nesting spaces for our feathered friends
  • 4 bug hotels, providing shelter for beneficial insects and pollinators

Our busy beehive

Highgate House is also home to a thriving beehive hosting around 55,000 honeybees!

Bees are essential for pollination, supporting countless plants and food systems, including the flowers, shrubs, and trees across our grounds. Their hard work brings life and colour to the site, and they even bless us with delicious honey which guests purchase at our gift shop!

Stewardship as worship

We believe caring for creation is part of our calling. Scripture reminds us that:

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” - Psalm 24:1

Every tree planted, every habitat nurtured, every species we help protect is part of our commitment to stewarding God’s creation with love and intention.

Come and see

Whether you’re joining us for a church retreat, leadership conference, or ministry event, we invite you to take time to enjoy the natural beauty around Highgate House. We pray the peace of this place helps refresh your spirit, just as we work to refresh and restore the land itself.
